To strengthen cooperation on climate change response

By UN Journal Kayla Lee

The 2nd Korea-Malaysia Climate Change Dialogue was held on September 2, at the Seoul Government Complex Annex to strengthen cooperation on climate change response between Korea and Malaysia.

Han Min-young, Director of the Climate, Environment, Science and Diplomacy Bureau at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Datuk Nor Yahati binti Awang, Deputy Minister of Environment and Sustainability, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Malaysia, participated as the chief representatives.

During the meeting, the two sides introduced domestic climate change policies, including a clean energy transition plan to achieve the 2050 carbon neutrality goal, and exchanged views on the status of negotiations on key agenda items for the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to be held in November this year.

In addition, the two sides discussed ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in areas such as ▴ international mitigation projects utilizing Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement, ▴ sharing experiences in the greenhouse gas emissions trading system, and ▴ cooperation on carbon-free energy and carbon capture and storage (CCS).

In particular, the two sides noted that international mitigation projects and cooperation on pro-climate technologies such as carbon capture and storage (CCS) contribute not only to achieving national greenhouse gas reduction targets but also to revitalizing private investment in the climate sector, and agreed to strengthen related cooperation between the two countries.
