UN Journal Kayla Lee |  The Second Uzbekistan Ambassador’s Cup International Kurash Championships were successfully held in Seoul on August 29, bringing together athletes, diplomats and sports officials in a celebration of athletic excellence and international friendship.

 

 

Jointly organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Uzbekistan in the Republic of Korea and the Korea Kurash Federation, the tournament also marked the 35th anniversary of Uzbekistan’s independence.

 

More than 100 athletes from cities and provinces across the Republic of Korea participated in the event, demonstrating impressive skill, determination and sportsmanship. Uzbek students studying in Korea also took an active part in the competition, helping introduce Uzbekistan’s national sport and cultural traditions to a broader Korean audience.

 

Diplomatic Corps Joins the Celebration

The opening ceremony was attended by Ambassador Alisher Abdusalomov of Uzbekistan, around 10 foreign ambassadors accredited to the Republic of Korea, representatives of diplomatic missions and senior figures from the Korean sports community.

 

Their participation reflected the growing international interest in Kurash and underscored the sport’s potential as an effective platform for cultural dialogue, sports diplomacy and people-to-people exchanges.

 

Ambassador Abdusalomov welcomed the athletes and distinguished guests, highlighting the cultural significance of Kurash and its role in bringing together people from different countries and backgrounds.

 

The presence of the diplomatic corps added international significance to the tournament, transforming the event into a forum for friendship and mutual understanding beyond the field of competition.

 

 

Kurash: From Uzbek Heritage to Global Sport

During the opening ceremony, speakers emphasized that Kurash is an integral part of Uzbekistan’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage.

 

Originating as a traditional Uzbek form of wrestling, Kurash has developed into an internationally recognized sport practiced in more than 130 countries. It continues to gain popularity and recognition on the global sporting stage.
