UN headquarters 'First Korean-American woman,' Michelle Park Steel, confirmed as U.S. ambassador to South Korea
UNJournal Lee Sung Jun | The United States Senate confirmed Michelle Park Steel, President Donald Trump's nominee for US Ambassador to South Korea, in a floor vote on June 17, ending a vacancy that had persisted for roughly 15 months since the departure of former Ambassador Sung Kim. The Senate approved Steel's confirmation by a vote of 55 to 39, completing the process approximately 65 days after Trump formally nominated her on April 13. With her confirmation, Steel becomes only the second Korean American to serve as US Ambassador to South Korea, following Sung Kim, who held the post from 2011

South Korea North Korea fires dozens of ballistic missiles into the East Sea
By UN Journal Lee Kap-soo North Korea fired a large number of short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) into the East Sea on May 30, it was confirmed. The Joint Chiefs of Staff said, “At around 6:14 a.m. on May 30, we captured about 10 suspected short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) fired into the East Sea from the Sunan area of Pyongyang, North Korea.” North Korea has a history of ballistic missile provocations, including test launches, but this is unusual.
