Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Tae-yul received the new Ambassador of Japan to Korea Koichi Mizushima and exchanged views on bilateral relations on July 5.
Minister Cho welcomed Ambassador Mizushima's appointment at a time when bilateral relations between Japan and South Korea, which are of vital national security and national interest, are developing on the basis of deep trust between the two leaders.
Cho also stressed that both sides should wisely manage bilateral issues in a mutually respectful and supportive manner in order to consolidate the positive trend of bilateral relations ahead of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic normalization next year.
Ambassador Mizushima expressed his hope that the two leaders and foreign ministers will continue to communicate closely based on trust, and agreed with Minister Cho on the importance of managing current issues based on mutual understanding.
The two sides appreciated the close cooperation among the three countries—the U.S., Japan and South Korea-- amid the deepening ties between Russia and China, and agreed that it is important to continue such cooperation on various occasions, including multilateral meetings and the UN Security Council.
